We held our very own Science Fair in school and asked our Innov8 Team, made up of pupils from all year groups at Park Road Community Primary School, to write about the event. Read what they had to say below.

"At Park Road, we held a fantastic Science Fair. It all started when a local scientist came in and presented some exciting experiments to us. She talked us through the experiment and explained why things happened and what caused the reactions. Our favourite experiment was when Menna blew through a tube that had custard powder in it and created a huge puff of fire! We had a great ‘launch day’ and had the chance to think like scientists. It helped us to begin to think about what we wanted our Science Fair to look like and what experiments we would do linked to our learning.

On the day, each year group demonstrated their learning through exciting experiments and talked through their knowledge with the local community. Parents and carers were very impressed by what they saw. The Innov8 team supported the fair, greeting parents and sharing knowledge. They then took the time to work in their year groups to do a short write up to give a feel for what their classes had done. 
In Year 6, we were investigating the heart and the circulatory system. We made a representation of the heart using different equipment and the parents had a go. We asked parents to join in with some exercises to see the effects it had on their pulse. Parents had lots of fun and even filled out their own retrieval slip to tell us what they had learnt.

Year 5 investigated the impact of forces by creating parachutes and seeing which ones took longer to land. The parents were a great help with the stop watches and the year 5 pupils found that the parachutes with the bigger surface areas stayed up for longer.

Year 4 demonstrated part of the water cycle and showed the process of how condensation changes to precipitation. We did this by adding shaving foam (representing the cloud) to the top of a cup of water. They then dripped food colouring onto the shaving foam (representing the rain.) We challenged the parents by asking them how many drops of food colouring it would take until it came through the ‘clouds’ as ‘rain.’

In Year 3, we learned how to make sedimentary rocks out of chocolate. We made a quiz about rocks and gave questions to parents to see if they could answer them. Rocks can be permeable and non-permeable. If it is permeable then water passes through it, if it is not permeable then water runs off it. 
In Year 2, we were learning about germs. We did a simple experiment where we used milk and fairy liquid. We put food colouring in the milk. The food colouring represented the germs. We then added fairy liquid on a cotton bud. When the fairy liquid touched the milk, the food colouring moved away from the fairy liquid. This shows that when we use soap, it repels the germs.

Reception and Year 1 explored colour mixing and the senses. Reception used skittles and submerged them in water to see what happened to the colours. Year 1 set up a smell test to see if parents could identify what was in each container.

 
We had great fun sharing our learning and working as scientists. We cant wait for our next event and share our learning with our community."
